In the 1950s, Sherry, the Spanish fortified wine with a rather stuffy image, suddenly became immensely popular. The Sherry diet was embraced by many a housewife, drinking Sherry was said to ensure a slim waistline.... At the time, the Netherlands was the leader in Sherry consumption worldwide and the biggest buyer in Spain. Fortunately, that idea faded into oblivion in the 1970s, but Sherry's image was damaged forever. Now it is still seen as an 'old wives' drink'. A shame!
