Sherry and Flamenco

Since the ancient beginnings of Flamenco, Sherry has been its most faithful companion. It is the very fuel of Flamenco, refreshing the throats of the “cantaores” (singers) and easing their pain with its magical qualities.

The “cante jondo” (deep song) from the depths of the soul is perfectly matched by the profound complexity of Sherry. No other wine has such passion, such “duende” (creative spirit from the soul).

Flamenco has a large range of “palos” or styles, from the hauntingly sad “soleá” or “seguiríya” through the rhythmic “bulería” to the joyous “alegría”.

Each one of these styles and many more can be enhanced by a Sherry: a Fino or Manzanilla for alegrías; a young Amontillado or Manzanilla Pasada for the buleria and an Oloroso for the soleá or seguiriya, perhaps.

If there is a Sherry for every mood, every season, then there is one for every palo.

It could be said that Flamenco has evolved in a kind of solera system as singers and guitarists, many of whom are gypsies, have passed their skills and traditions down through their families like a solera passes its wisdom to the younger wine.  This wine is aged in bodegas where the sound of Flamenco often fills the air, and there is a scientific school of thought which believes that music helps wine to develop.  The truth is, of course, that they help each other.

Once Sherry is bottled and once Flamenco is recorded, these treasures of the human soul can easily be obtained, but it is important to obtain more than one style of Sherry and more than one style of Flamenco. That way you can experience the very passion and soul of the incredibly rich culture of Andalucía. If Flamenco is the expression of life, then so is Sherry – unleash the passion!

Three generations of family connections in Cadiz gave me a healthy love of the important thing in life: Sherry. After 40 years in the wine trade, ten of them in Spain, I am beginning to understand its history, culture, variety, quality, value and versatility. So I am doing all I can to introduce others to its unequalled delights.
