‘The Revolution of Marco de Jerez’ A masterclass celebrating ten years of International Sherry Week.

Hosted by Scott Wasley of The Spanish Acquisition (specialist Spanish importer). Jerez and the wines produced from this part of Spain are as fascinating as they are/can be confusing. So who better to lead a deep-dive masterclass into this topic than Australian premier 'Sherry' expert Scott Wasley of The Spanish Acquisition (wine importer).

In early November we celebrate 10 years of International Sherry Week (ISW). As such, we are welcoming Scott to the store to host a masterclass on the wines of Jerez, for 12 customers only. While Scott is an importer, he is also an educator, and a tasting with him is eye-opening and entirely captivating. Plus, you'll be tasting some really exciting wines (10 in total).

Please join us for a fantastic masterclass as we celebrate one of the most exciting and complex collections of wine styles from anywhere in the world. It's also a very dynamic region with change underfoot, as teased by Scott below (this is just a taste of some of the topics to be discussed at the tasting): "The ‘revolution’ currently underway in Marco de Jerez has brought renewed focus on terroir, and a lot of time has been spent (re-) learning the identity/style influences of variants in vientos, Albarizas, Pagos and Parcelas.

We’ve learnt how great viticulture can take straight up varietal Palomino from being a hack variety to one of the world’s more interesting whites. Vinos de Pasto - Palominos with some ageing, but short of the age and strength stipulations which determine Finos, have been re-introduced to the market. And, there have been massive changes in the realm of Finos themselves. Firstly, lots of historically-styled Finos with great viticulture and an extraordinary degree of terroir complexity have been re-introduced. Some of these are statically-aged (vintage, single-bota bottlings) rather than solera-blended.

These days, some arrive at 15% abv (along with at least 2 years of biological ageing, the legal requirement for Finos) entirely with natural alcohol, thanks to a little asoleo (sun-drying) and the repealed law from 1969 which stipulated fortification." In short, there is a lot to cover and explore. 1.5 hours will hardly be enough!
