Jerez is Organising an International Sherry Marathon

03 June 2016

José Manuel Toledo of Terra Incognita Sport explained at a press conference that the event will take advantage of the rising international impact of the brand “Sherry” and link it in a sporting way with tourism.

The first six kilometres of the course will be run through Jerez city centre before heading for the vineyards, which look at their most impressive in the month of May.

The organisers have set a target of about 2,000 competitors and hope to attract amateur athletes who are happy to compete in any kind of marathon as well as cross country runners whose sport is growing in popularity. In this way the Sherry Marathon will provide competitors with the opportunity to test themselves both on and off road, the first event in Spain to do so.

After leaving the Parque González Hontoria the runners will make their way through the city streets towards the beautiful countryside of the Macharnudo or Carrascal vineyards while onlookers can enjoy a glass of Sherry surrounded by vines while they cheer on the competitors. To achieve this, meeting points will be set up in the Cerro Viejo, Macharnudo and La Canaliega vineyards.

The Junta councillor for Culture, Tourism and Sport for Cádiz, Remedios Palma, is convinced that this event has a very good future and will help to break the “seasonality” of the tourism sector.
