The 9th Sherry Week will see hundreds of events in 17 countries

NP Sherry Week - 31 Oct

From 7 to 13 November, Sherry-lovers around the world will be sniffing, sipping, pouring and pairing their favourite fortified wines from southern Spain in the biggest annual celebration of Sherry Wine. Aficionados will be treated to Sherry Wine tasting menus, creative cocktails, masterclasses, and sherry flights, discovering new and unexpected flavour combinations from these incomparably versatile wines, from dry, crisp fino to nutty amontillado and complex, aromatic palo cortado. As always, Sherry Week takes place under the auspices of the D.O. of Jerez-Xérès-Sherry and Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

This year, the countries with the most events registered so far are the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, the USA, Brazil and Australia. But many more events will be taking place spontaneously, in these and other countries, and all events will be shared online using the #sherryweek hashtag – coming to a Social Media channel near you. Follow @sherrywinesjerez to make sure you don’t miss out on anything.

Sherry-lovers in the UK are spoiled for choice this year, with over 250 daily registered events. The Sherry Week UK Tour alone has more than 50 participating venues, look out for the poster about how to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Jerez Spain during next year’s Copa Jerez sherry pairing competition, for the world’s top chefs and sommeliers, in October 2023.

The Mini Sherry Fair makes a welcome return to The Gibson in Washington DC on Saturday 12 November. The upstairs floor of this stylish speakeasy will be packed with Sherry bodegas offering tastings to lucky customers. They will have sherry giveaways and venencia pouring, as well as sherry cocktails.

At an event for 180 bartenders and mixology professionals in China, renowned expert Diego Cabrera will explain (online from Spain) about the superb versatility of Sherry in the world of cocktails. Diego has created Sherry cocktails especially for this event.

Sydney is the focus for Sherry Week in Australia this year, with in-store tastings and Sherry flights in restaurants, some of the 25 daily registered events in the city – the most in the nine years since the event started in 2014!

In addition to Jerez Restaurant Week, which will feature 80 restaurants in Seville, Madrid and Barcelona offering sherry pairing menus, Spain will celebrate with more than 500 daily registered events. This includes two online tastings (see below).

Sherry Week kicks off in style on Monday 7 November at 19.00 (CET), when Regulatory Council President Cesar Saldaña will offer an exclusive preview of the much-anticipated English translation of his Book of Sherry Wines, described as “definitive” by Sarah Jane Evans MW, and “a book with style and depth” by Josep Roca. Cesar will be joined by Ruben Luyten of the award-winning blog Sherry Notes. The book will be published in December; participants of this event can sign up to be notified of when the book is available.

The exciting news about the latest DO regulation changes, extending the Sherry production and ageing zone, and what this means for the future of Sherry, will be discussed in a Sherry O’Clock with Cesar Saldaña, along with special guests Sarah Jane Evans MW and Rick Fisher, Spanish Programs Director of the Wine Scholar Guild. Tuesday 8 November at 18.00 (CET) on Instagram live @sherrywinesjerez

Two online tastings will cater to wine-lovers with different levels of knowledge: an in-depth look at biological ageing for experienced Sherry-philes, or an introduction to Sherry Wines aimed at those with less knowledge. On Tuesday 8 November at 19.00 (CET), ElBulliFoundation drinks manager and Jancis Robinson collaborator, Ferran Centelles, and Wine Marketing expert Amaia Soto, will discuss “La crianza biológica y sus maridajes” (Biological ageing and pairing) – sign up here; while the next day, Wednesday 9 November at 19.00 (CET), sommelier Mariano Braga and Sherry Wine Regulatory Council communications director Belén Roldan present, “Jerez and its wines”. Sign up here.

Those resident in Spain can order their tasting packs from Bodebeca - but hurry, as time is running out - once they’ve signed up for an online tasting (both will be conducted in Spanish). The tastings will also be broadcast live on @sherrywinesjerez social media channels. Be sure to follow us (if you don’t already) to keep up with all the action.
